"How much will a Shopify store cost?" is the first question almost every new seller asks us. The honest answer is: it depends on what you need. But that's not very helpful, so in this guide we break down every cost involved — the ones you'll pay Shopify, the ones you'll pay for apps and design, and the hidden ones people forget.
Note: Shopify, app and theme prices change regularly and are often billed in US dollars. Always check the current prices on their websites. We focus here on what you pay for and how to plan your budget.
The 5 parts of a Shopify store budget
- Shopify subscription (monthly or yearly)
- Theme (free or paid)
- Apps (reviews, WhatsApp, shipping, upsells)
- Design and setup (if you hire someone)
- Running costs: payment gateway fees, shipping, marketing
1. Shopify subscription
Shopify offers several plans, from a basic plan suitable for new stores to advanced plans for high-volume businesses. Higher plans add more staff accounts, better reports and lower transaction fees when you use third-party gateways.
Our advice: almost every new Indian store should start on the basic plan. Upgrade only when your sales justify it. Paying yearly is usually cheaper than paying monthly once you're sure.
2. Theme: free or paid?
Shopify's free themes (like Dawn and its variations) are fast, mobile-friendly and well supported. Paid themes from the Shopify Theme Store are a one-time purchase and offer more layouts and features.
A paid theme isn't automatically better. A free theme, well customised with good photos and clear content, often outperforms a cluttered premium theme. Choose based on speed and what your products need — not just the demo.
3. Apps
Apps are where budgets quietly grow. Typical apps for an Indian store include:
- Product reviews (many have free plans)
- WhatsApp chat and order notifications
- Shipping integration (e.g. Shiprocket)
- COD verification or limits
- GST invoice generation
- Upsells and bundles (optional)
Most apps charge monthly. Ten apps at a small monthly fee each adds up quickly — and every app can slow your store. Start with only what you need; add more when there's a clear reason.
4. Design and setup
You can build a store yourself, hire a freelancer, or work with an agency. Here's what really changes between them:
- DIY: lowest cash cost, highest time cost. Fine if you're comfortable with technology and have time to learn.
- Freelancer: good for simple stores. Make sure they handle payments, shipping, policies and tracking — not just the design.
- Agency: costs more but should include planning, custom design, full setup, tracking, testing, training and support after launch.
The price of a professional setup depends on the number of products, custom design work, integrations and content (photos, descriptions). Ask for a fixed quote with a clear list of what's included.
What a complete setup should include
Whoever builds your store, make sure these are covered:
- Theme customised to your brand, mobile-first
- Products, variants, collections and menus
- Payment gateway with UPI, cards and COD rules
- Shipping rates and courier integration
- GST settings and invoice app
- Policies: shipping, returns, refunds, privacy, terms
- Domain connected with SSL
- Google Analytics, Google Ads and Meta Pixel tracking
- Test orders before launch and a training session
5. Running costs people forget
- Payment gateway fees: a small percentage of every online payment, charged by Razorpay/PayU/Cashfree.
- Shopify transaction fees: may apply when you use third-party gateways, depending on your plan.
- Shipping and COD charges: including returns (RTO), which can be significant for COD orders.
- Domain renewal: yearly.
- Marketing: ads, influencer posts and content. A store without marketing gets very few visitors.
How to keep costs under control
- Start on the basic plan and a fast free or mid-range theme.
- Install only essential apps; review them every few months.
- Reduce COD returns with order confirmation on WhatsApp.
- Invest in good product photos — they improve sales more than most apps.
- Set up tracking from day one so marketing money goes to what works.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for Shopify in rupees?
Shopify bills in the currency shown for your region at signup. Check your billing settings and the pricing page for current details.
How long does it take to build a Shopify store?
A simple, well-planned store can go live in 2–3 weeks. Most delays come from waiting for product photos and content.
Is a Shopify store a one-time cost?
No. The setup is one-time, but the Shopify plan, apps, domain and marketing are ongoing.
