Ask five web designers how much a website costs and you'll get five very different answers. That's because "a website" can mean anything from a one-page profile to a full online platform. In this guide, we explain what actually drives the cost of a business website in India, so you can compare quotes properly and avoid paying for the wrong things.

Why website prices vary so much

The price of a website depends on four things:

  1. Scope: number of pages and features
  2. Design: template-based or custom-designed
  3. Content: who writes the text and provides photos
  4. Who builds it: DIY tool, freelancer or agency — and what's included after launch

The main types of business websites

1. One-page or small business website

A single page or 3–5 pages: Home, About, Services, Contact. Ideal for local businesses, consultants and startups that need a professional presence quickly. This is the most affordable option.

2. Standard business website

Usually 6–15 pages, with separate pages for each service, a portfolio or gallery, testimonials, a blog and enquiry forms. Most service businesses — clinics, builders, schools, agencies, manufacturers — fit here.

3. E-commerce website

Product catalogue, cart, checkout and payments. Shopify suits most stores; custom e-commerce makes sense for special pricing or workflows. See our Shopify cost guide.

4. Web application or portal

Logins, dashboards, bookings, CRM features or client portals. These are priced as software projects, based on the modules required.

What should be included in the price?

When comparing quotes, check whether each of these is included — cheap quotes often leave them out:

  • Custom design (not just installing a template)
  • Mobile-first layout tested on real phones
  • Content writing or editing
  • Enquiry forms, WhatsApp and click-to-call buttons
  • Basic SEO: titles, descriptions, sitemap, Search Console
  • Google Analytics and conversion tracking
  • SSL certificate (https)
  • An admin panel you can use yourself
  • Training and post-launch support

Ongoing costs to plan for

  • Domain: renewed yearly (.in or .com).
  • Hosting: yearly or monthly. Good hosting is worth paying for — it affects speed and uptime.
  • Business email: Google Workspace or Zoho, per user.
  • Maintenance: updates, backups, security and small changes. Essential for WordPress sites.
  • Marketing: SEO and ads to bring visitors. A website without visitors won't bring enquiries.

DIY, freelancer or agency?

DIY website builders are cheap and quick, but you do all the work, and they're often limited for SEO and speed.

Freelancers can be good value for simple sites. Check their portfolio, ask who will maintain the site, and make sure the domain and hosting are in your name.

Agencies cost more but usually cover planning, design, content, SEO setup, tracking and support — and you're not dependent on one person.

Red flags in a website quote

  • The domain or hosting will be registered in the developer's name, not yours
  • No mention of mobile design, SEO basics or SSL
  • "Unlimited pages" for a very low price (usually a template with your logo)
  • No clear list of what's included or how many revision rounds you get
  • No plan for updates and maintenance after launch

How to get an accurate quote

Prepare these before contacting anyone — you'll get faster, more accurate prices:

  1. List of pages you think you need
  2. 2–3 websites you like (and why)
  3. Features: forms, booking, payments, blog, multiple languages
  4. Whether you have content and photos, or need help
  5. Your launch deadline

Is a cheap website worth it?

A website's job is to bring enquiries. A cheap site that's slow, looks dated or doesn't show up on Google can cost you far more in lost customers than you saved. On the other hand, you don't need an expensive custom platform to start. The best value is a fast, professional site with clear calls-to-action, built so you can grow it later.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a business website take?

Typically 2–4 weeks for a standard business site, depending on content and approvals.

Will I own my website?

You should. Insist that the domain, hosting account and website files are in your name.

Do I need WordPress?

Not necessarily. Custom-built sites can be faster and more secure; WordPress suits sites needing many plugins. Choose what fits your needs.
