Selling on Amazon without advertising is hard — especially for a new product with no reviews or ranking. But Amazon PPC (pay-per-click) can also drain your profit quickly if you don't understand how it works. This beginner's guide explains the basics in plain language: the ad types, the numbers that matter (ACoS and TACoS), and the most common ways sellers waste money.
What is Amazon PPC?
Amazon PPC lets you pay to show your products in search results and on product pages. You pay only when a shopper clicks your ad. Because the ads appear exactly where people are about to buy, Amazon advertising can be very effective — if it's managed well.
The three main ad types
1. Sponsored Products
Ads for individual products that appear in search results and on product pages. This is where most sellers start and where most sales usually come from.
2. Sponsored Brands
Banner-style ads at the top of search results with your logo, a headline and several products — or a video. Available to brand-registered sellers. Great for brand visibility.
3. Sponsored Display
Ads that can retarget shoppers who viewed your products, or appear on competitors' product pages. Useful once your basic campaigns are working.
ACoS and TACoS explained
ACoS (Advertising Cost of Sale) = ad spend ÷ sales from ads × 100. If you spend ₹1,000 on ads and they bring ₹4,000 in sales, your ACoS is 25%.
TACoS (Total Advertising Cost of Sale) = ad spend ÷ total sales (ads + organic) × 100. It shows how dependent your business is on ads.
A low ACoS isn't always the goal. During a product launch, a higher ACoS may be worth it to build sales history and ranking. Over time, a healthy account sees TACoS fall as organic sales grow.
Know your break-even ACoS
Before running any ads, calculate your profit margin before ad spend: selling price minus product cost, Amazon fees, shipping and GST. That margin, as a percentage of the price, is your break-even ACoS. Above it, every ad sale loses money; below it, you're profitable.
Match types: how Amazon matches your keywords
- Broad: shows for related searches — good for discovering new keywords.
- Phrase: shows when the search contains your phrase.
- Exact: shows only for that search (and close variations) — most control.
- Automatic campaigns: Amazon chooses searches based on your listing — great for research.
A simple campaign structure for beginners
- Auto campaign to discover which searches convert.
- Broad/phrase campaign with your main keywords.
- Exact campaign for proven winning searches, with higher bids.
- Product targeting to appear on competitor and complementary product pages.
- Brand defence on your own brand name (once you have one).
Every week, check the search term report: move searches that bring sales into the exact campaign, and add irrelevant or unprofitable ones as negative keywords.
7 common mistakes that waste money
- Running ads to a weak listing — poor images, few reviews, unclear title
- No negative keywords, so ads show for irrelevant searches
- One target ACoS for every product, regardless of margin
- Never checking the search term report
- Turning ads on and off frequently, which resets learning
- Bidding very high on broad keywords too early
- Judging success only by ACoS, ignoring organic ranking and TACoS
Fix your listing before you scale ads
Ads bring people to your page; the listing does the selling. Make sure your main image is clear and compliant, the title includes the key search terms naturally, bullet points explain benefits, and A+ content (for brand-registered sellers) answers common questions. A better conversion rate lowers ACoS on every campaign.
What results to expect
Wasted spend can usually be reduced within a few weeks of cleaning up campaigns and adding negatives. Building strong organic ranking takes longer — typically a few months of consistent sales and optimisation.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need brand registry for Amazon ads?
Not for Sponsored Products. Sponsored Brands and some other features require brand registry.
Should I advertise a product with no reviews?
You can, carefully — but conversions are usually lower. Work on the listing and early reviews (through Amazon's legitimate programmes) alongside ads.
Do the same ideas work on Flipkart?
The principles — relevant keywords, negatives, margins and listing quality — apply to all marketplaces.
