When someone searches "website designer near me", "best dentist in Kondapur" or "AC repair Hyderabad", the first thing they usually see is not a list of websites — it's a map with three businesses. That's the Google local pack, and it's driven by your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business).
For many local businesses, the profile brings more calls than the website itself. Here's how to set it up and optimise it, step by step.
How Google decides who appears
Google says local results are based mainly on three things:
- Relevance: how well your profile matches the search
- Distance: how far you are from the searcher or the location in the search
- Prominence: how well-known your business is — including reviews, links and your website
You can't change distance, but you can improve relevance and prominence a lot.
Step 1: Claim and verify your profile
Search for your business on Google Maps. If it exists, claim it; if not, create it at business.google.com. Complete verification (Google offers methods such as phone, email, video or postcard depending on the business). Until it's verified, many features won't work.
Step 2: Choose the right categories
Your primary category is one of the strongest ranking factors. Pick the most specific one that describes your main service — for example "Website designer" rather than just "Consultant". Then add secondary categories for other services you genuinely offer.
Step 3: Get your name, address and phone exactly right
- Use your real business name — don't stuff keywords into it (Google can suspend profiles for this).
- Keep the address and phone number identical everywhere: website footer, social profiles and directories.
- If you serve customers at their location and don't want your address shown, set a service area instead.
Step 4: Fill every section
- Description: what you do, who you serve and where, in natural language.
- Services/products: list each service with a short description.
- Hours: keep them accurate, including holiday hours.
- Website link: link to your homepage or the most relevant service page.
- Attributes: such as online appointments or women-led, where they apply.
Step 5: Add real photos regularly
Upload photos of your office, team, work and products. Real photos build trust and keep your profile active. Avoid stock images. Add new photos every month.
Step 6: Build a steady flow of genuine reviews
Reviews influence both ranking and whether people call you. To get more:
- Ask every happy customer, right after completing the work.
- Make it easy: send your direct review link on WhatsApp.
- Reply to every review — positive and negative — politely and professionally.
Never buy fake reviews or offer incentives for positive ones. It breaks Google's policies and can get reviews removed or your profile restricted.
Step 7: Post updates
Google Business Profile lets you publish posts: offers, events, new projects and tips. Regular posts show that your business is active and give searchers more reasons to choose you.
Step 8: Connect it with your website
Your website supports your profile's prominence. Make sure it has:
- The same name, address and phone number as the profile
- A page for each main service
- Location pages for areas you serve, with genuinely local content
- LocalBusiness schema markup
- A fast mobile experience — see our website speed guide
Step 9: Track results
The profile's performance section shows searches, views, calls, direction requests and website clicks. Check it monthly to see which changes made a difference.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Keyword-stuffing the business name
- Using a virtual office address you don't actually operate from
- Creating duplicate profiles for the same location
- Ignoring negative reviews
- Setting it up once and never updating it
