  3. Google Ads vs Facebook Ads: Which Should...

If you have a limited marketing budget, the question isn't "Should I advertise?" — it's "Where should I advertise first?" For most Indian small businesses the choice comes down to Google Ads or Meta Ads (Facebook and Instagram). Both can work brilliantly. Both can waste money fast. The difference is how people find you.

The key difference: intent vs interest

Google Ads shows your ad to people who are actively searching for something — "Shopify developer Hyderabad", "best CRM for small business", "AC service near me". They already have a need. This is called intent-based advertising.

Meta Ads show your ad to people based on who they are and what they're interested in, while they scroll Facebook and Instagram. They weren't looking for you — your ad has to catch their attention and create the desire. This is interest-based advertising.

When Google Ads is the better choice

  • People already search for your service (plumbers, clinics, website design, coaching, B2B services)
  • Customers need you urgently or are ready to buy
  • Your service is hard to show visually
  • You want enquiries within days of launching

Search ads usually bring higher-quality leads because people come with a clear need. The trade-off: clicks in competitive industries can be expensive, and volume is limited to how many people search.

When Meta Ads is the better choice

  • Your product is visual — fashion, jewellery, food, home décor, beauty
  • People don't search for it, but buy it when they see it
  • You want to build brand awareness or launch something new
  • Your target audience is clearly defined by age, location or interests

Meta ads can reach large audiences at lower cost per click. The trade-off: lead quality can be lower, especially with instant lead forms, because people fill them in casually.

Lead quality: the hidden cost

A cheaper lead isn't better if it never converts. Many businesses find Meta lead forms bring lots of contacts who don't answer the phone, while Google search leads cost more but convert better. To improve quality on both platforms:

  • Send people to a dedicated landing page instead of a quick in-app form
  • Ask one or two qualifying questions (budget, timeline)
  • Show a starting price so the wrong people self-filter
  • Track which leads become customers and feed that back to the platform

Budget: how much to start with

There's no universal number; it depends on your industry, city and competition. A sensible approach:

  1. Start with a modest test budget for 2–4 weeks.
  2. Track cost per lead and, more importantly, cost per customer.
  3. Increase budget only on campaigns that bring customers at a profitable cost.

Tracking makes or breaks both

Without proper tracking, you're guessing. Set up:

  • Google: Google Ads conversion tracking and Google Analytics 4, counting form submissions, calls and WhatsApp clicks.
  • Meta: the Meta Pixel plus the Conversions API, so leads are tracked even when browsers block cookies.
  • Offline conversions: send back which leads became paying customers, so both platforms learn who your real buyers are.

The best answer for most businesses: both, in order

For service businesses, we usually start with Google Search to capture existing demand, then add Meta ads to reach new audiences and retarget website visitors. For visual e-commerce brands, we often start with Meta and add Google Shopping and Search as sales grow. If you sell on Amazon, read our Amazon PPC guide.

Quick comparison

  • Who sees the ad: Google — people searching; Meta — people scrolling
  • Lead quality: usually higher on Google Search
  • Cost per click: usually lower on Meta
  • Best for: Google — services and urgent needs; Meta — visual products and awareness
  • Speed of results: Google is usually faster for leads; Meta needs testing time

Frequently asked questions

Can I run ads without a website?

You can, but a fast landing page with a clear offer almost always improves results and lead quality.

How soon will I see results?

Google Search often brings enquiries in the first week. Meta campaigns usually need a few weeks of testing creatives and audiences.

Should I boost Instagram posts?

Boosting is simple but limited. Ads Manager gives far better control over objectives, audiences and tracking.
